A/B Testing

A method of comparing two versions of an app store listing element (screenshots, icon, description) to determine which version performs better at converting visitors to downloads.

A/B testing in the context of ASO means showing different versions of your store listing to different groups of users and measuring which version produces more downloads. It is the most reliable way to optimize conversion rate because it uses real user behavior rather than assumptions.

What You Can A/B Test

  • App icon - different designs, colors, or styles
  • Screenshots - different layouts, messaging, feature highlights, or ordering
  • Short description - different value propositions or keyword emphasis (Google Play)
  • Feature graphic - different promotional images (Google Play)
  • Preview video - different content, pacing, or messaging

Platform Support

Google Play offers native A/B testing through Store Listing Experiments. You can test up to 5 variants against a control for any listing element. Google splits traffic automatically and reports statistical significance.

Apple App Store introduced Product Page Optimization (PPO) which allows testing up to 3 alternative treatments for icons, screenshots, and preview videos. Results are available in App Store Connect analytics.

Running Effective Tests

  1. Test one element at a time to isolate what caused the change
  2. Run tests until you reach statistical significance (typically 7-14 days)
  3. Use a meaningful sample size (at least 1,000 impressions per variant)
  4. Document results and apply learnings to future tests
  5. Re-test periodically as your audience and competitive landscape change

Impact on ASO

Even small conversion rate improvements from A/B testing have large compounding effects. A 5% improvement in conversion rate means 5% more downloads from the same organic traffic, which improves your download velocity, which can improve your keyword rankings, which drives even more traffic.
