App Icon

The visual identifier for an app displayed in search results, category charts, the home screen, and Settings. The single most influential visual element for conversion in app store listings.

The app icon is the first visual element users see when they encounter your app in search results, browse pages, or recommendations. It is displayed at small sizes (29x29 to 180x180 points on iOS) but carries enormous influence on whether users tap to learn more.

Icon and Conversion

The icon appears in search results alongside the title, subtitle, and rating. Users make split-second decisions about which results to tap based largely on the icon’s visual appeal and implied quality. A polished, distinctive icon signals a professional app.

Design Principles

  • Simplicity: Use a single focal element, not multiple competing elements
  • Distinctiveness: Stand out from competitors in the same search results
  • Recognizability: Should be identifiable at the smallest display sizes
  • Brand consistency: Match your app’s visual identity and color palette
  • No text: Text is unreadable at small icon sizes (Apple specifically discourages it)

A/B Testing Icons

Both Apple (Product Page Optimization) and Google (Store Listing Experiments) allow A/B testing of app icons. Even small icon changes can produce measurable conversion rate differences. Test different color schemes, shapes, and imagery to find what resonates with your audience.

Platform Requirements

  • iOS: 1024x1024 pixels, no transparency, no rounded corners (the system applies them)
  • Google Play: 512x512 pixels, 32-bit PNG, may include transparency
