App Store Review

The evaluation process where Apple examines every submitted app and update for guideline compliance before making it available to users.

App Store Review is the formal evaluation that every app and update must undergo before it can be published on the Apple App Store. Apple’s review team assesses submissions for compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines, checking functionality, content appropriateness, privacy practices, and overall user experience.

The Review Workflow

After a developer submits a build through App Store Connect, the app enters the review queue. A reviewer installs and tests the app, verifying that it works as described, does not crash, and follows all applicable guidelines. The reviewer may also check that metadata, screenshots, and descriptions accurately represent the app’s functionality. Most reviews are completed within 24 to 48 hours.

Possible Outcomes

  • Approved - the app passes review and can be released immediately or on a scheduled date
  • Rejected - specific guideline violations are identified and communicated to the developer
  • Needs more information - the reviewer requests clarification, demo accounts, or additional context

Expedited Review

Apple offers an expedited review option for critical situations such as fixing a security vulnerability or resolving a bug that causes data loss. Developers can request this through App Store Connect, though approval is not guaranteed. Expedited reviews are intended for genuine emergencies and should not be used for routine submissions.
