Autocomplete Suggestions
Search terms that app stores suggest as the user types a query, reflecting real user search behavior and providing valuable keyword research data.
Autocomplete suggestions are the dropdown results that appear as a user types in the app store search bar. They are generated from actual search behavior data and represent terms that real users frequently search for.
Why Autocomplete Matters for ASO
Autocomplete suggestions are one of the most reliable sources of keyword ideas because they are based on real search patterns. If the App Store suggests “meditation for sleep” when you type “meditation,” it means a significant number of users have searched for that exact phrase.
Mining Autocomplete for Keywords
A systematic approach to extracting keywords from autocomplete:
- Type your seed keyword and record all suggestions
- Type your seed keyword followed by each letter of the alphabet (a-z) and record each set of suggestions
- Type your seed keyword followed by common modifiers (for, with, free, best) and record suggestions
This technique can generate 50-200 long-tail keyword candidates from a single seed.
Autocomplete and User Behavior
Autocomplete suggestions influence user behavior. Many users select a suggestion rather than finishing their typed query. This means autocomplete terms often have higher actual search volume than their raw keyword data suggests, because users are funneled toward them by the interface.
Platform Differences
Apple and Google generate different autocomplete suggestions for the same seed terms because they use different underlying search data. Run autocomplete research on both platforms separately to capture the full range of keyword opportunities.
