Category Volatility

How frequently apps enter and leave the top rankings in a specific category, indicating whether the market is stable or open to new entrants.

Category volatility measures the rate of change in a category’s top rankings over a given period. A highly volatile category sees frequent shifts in which apps hold the top positions, while a low-volatility category has a stable set of leaders that rarely change. Understanding volatility is essential for deciding whether to enter a category and how aggressively to invest in ASO.

High vs. Low Volatility

In high-volatility categories, new apps regularly break into the top charts and existing leaders frequently drop. This typically indicates that user preferences shift quickly, seasonal trends play a large role, or no single app has built a strong enough competitive moat. These categories present better opportunities for new entrants because the rankings are not locked in place. In low-volatility categories, the same apps dominate month after month. Entering these categories requires significantly more resources because you must overcome deeply entrenched competitors with established download histories and review counts.

How to Track Volatility

Monitor category rankings daily or weekly over a period of at least 60 to 90 days. Count how many new apps enter the top 20 or top 50 during that window and how many drop out. Tools that provide historical ranking data make this analysis much easier. Compare volatility across multiple categories to find the best opportunities. Categories that show periodic spikes in volatility, often around seasonal events or platform changes, may offer strategic windows for a well-timed launch.
