Category Volatility

How frequently apps enter and leave the top rankings in a specific category, indicating whether the market is stable or open to new entrants.

Category volatility measures how often a category’s top rankings shift over a given period. A volatile category sees frequent changes in which apps hold the top positions, while a stable category has the same leaders month after month. Understanding this rate of change guides decisions about whether to enter a category and how much to invest in ASO.

High vs. Low Volatility

In high-volatility categories, new apps break into the top charts regularly and existing leaders drop just as often. This pattern signals that user preferences shift fast, seasonal trends play a large role, or no single app has built a strong competitive moat. These categories present better opportunities for newcomers because the rankings remain fluid. In low-volatility categories, the same apps dominate for months. Breaking in demands far more resources because you must overcome entrenched competitors with deep download histories and large review counts.

How to Track Volatility

Monitor category rankings daily or weekly over at least 60 to 90 days. Count how many new apps enter the top 20 or top 50 during that window and how many fall out. Tools with historical ranking data simplify this analysis. Compare results across multiple categories to find the strongest opportunities. Categories that show periodic spikes - often around seasonal events or platform changes - may offer strategic windows for a well-timed launch.
