Dynamic Island
The interactive area around the front camera on iPhone 14 Pro and later that displays real-time app information through Live Activities.
Dynamic Island is a hardware and software feature introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro that transforms the front camera cutout into an interactive display area. It shows real-time information from apps using Live Activities, expanding and contracting to present compact, minimal, or expanded views based on user interaction and the type of content shown.
How It Works
Dynamic Island supports three presentation modes. The compact view shows a small indicator alongside the camera area, suited for ongoing background activities like music playback or timers. The minimal view appears when multiple activities run at once, displaying a small indicator for secondary tasks. The expanded view activates when a user taps or long-presses the island, revealing detailed information and interactive controls. Developers build Dynamic Island support through the ActivityKit framework, the same system used for lock screen Live Activities.
Relevance to App Visibility
Dynamic Island creates a unique, always-visible touchpoint on the user’s most viewed screen area. This persistent presence reinforces brand awareness and encourages users to return. From an ASO and marketing perspective, support for this feature serves as a differentiator you can promote in store listings and preview videos. Apps that integrate with it demonstrate platform alignment and technical depth, both of which can influence Apple’s editorial team when selecting apps to feature in curated collections.
