Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
Critical metric tracked to measure the success of an app's growth, engagement, or monetization strategy.
What Is a Key Performance Indicator?
A Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a measurable value that demonstrates how effectively an app is achieving its core business objectives. KPIs differ from general metrics in that they are specifically chosen to reflect strategic priorities. For an app focused on growth, KPIs might include daily installs and organic download share. For a subscription app, monthly recurring revenue and trial-to-paid conversion rate would be more relevant KPIs.
Common ASO and App KPIs
In the context of ASO and app marketing, frequently tracked KPIs include keyword ranking positions, conversion rate from store listing views to installs, organic versus paid install ratio, retention rates at day 1, day 7, and day 30, and average revenue per user. Selecting the right KPIs depends on the app’s current stage and goals. Early-stage apps typically prioritize acquisition and activation KPIs, while mature apps shift focus toward retention and monetization indicators.
Setting and Monitoring KPIs
Effective KPI management involves setting clear targets, establishing measurement cadences, and creating accountability around performance. Teams should limit their focus to 5-10 KPIs to avoid diluting attention. Regular review cycles, whether weekly or monthly, help teams identify when performance deviates from targets and take corrective action. Dashboards that visualize KPI trends in real time make it easier to stay aligned on priorities across teams.
