Keyword Difficulty

A metric that estimates how hard it is to rank for a specific keyword in app store search, based on the strength of currently ranked apps.

Keyword difficulty is a score from App Store Optimization (ASO) tools that estimates how hard it is to rank for a given search term in the App Store or Google Play. It factors in the download volume, ratings, age, and metadata optimization of apps currently on the first page of results.

How Keyword Difficulty Is Calculated

Most ASO tools calculate keyword difficulty by analyzing the top 10 results for a keyword and evaluating:

  • Download volume of ranked apps - higher downloads mean stronger competitors
  • Average rating - well-rated apps are harder to displace
  • Number of ratings - more reviews signal an established, trusted app
  • App age - older apps with consistent ranking history have built authority
  • Title optimization - apps with the keyword in their title have stronger relevance signals

The result is typically a score from 0-100, where higher scores indicate more competitive keywords.

Using Keyword Difficulty in Your Strategy

Low difficulty terms (0-30) are ideal for new apps or apps entering a fresh category. Medium difficulty terms (30-60) are achievable for apps with established download history and ratings. High difficulty terms (60-100) require strong organic authority or sustained marketing investment.

Combining difficulty scores with search volume and the Keyword Golden Ratio (KGR) gives you a complete picture of which terms are worth targeting and in what order.

Limitations

Difficulty scores are estimates, not guarantees. Different ASO tools calculate scores using different methods, and actual ranking challenges depend on factors the tools may not capture, such as Apple’s personalization algorithms and individual download history.
