Keyword Expansion
The process of taking seed keywords and generating a larger list of related long-tail variations using modifiers, autocomplete, competitor analysis, and combinatorial techniques.
Keyword expansion is the second stage of ASO keyword research, following seed keyword identification. It transforms a small set of broad terms into a comprehensive list of specific, targetable keyword candidates.
Expansion Techniques
Modifier addition: Append audience, feature, use case, and attribute modifiers to each seed. “Meditation” expands to “meditation for beginners,” “meditation with timer,” “meditation for sleep,” “free meditation app.”
Autocomplete mining: Type each seed into the app store search bar and systematically record suggestions for every letter combination.
Competitor keyword analysis: Use ASO tools to discover keywords your competitors rank for that you haven’t considered.
Synonym and related term expansion: For each seed, list synonyms and closely related concepts. “Budget” expands to “expense,” “spending,” “finance,” “money management.”
Typical Expansion Ratios
A good seed keyword should generate 10-20 long-tail candidates. Starting with 20-30 seeds typically produces 200-400 candidates before filtering.
Filtering After Expansion
Not every expanded keyword is worth targeting. Filter by minimum search volume (50+), relevance to your app, and competitive feasibility. The remaining candidates then go through KGR calculation or difficulty analysis to identify the best targets.
