Keyword Ranking

The position at which an app appears in search results for a specific keyword in the App Store or Google Play.

Keyword ranking is the position your app holds when a user searches for a specific term. If your app is the third result for “meditation timer,” your keyword ranking for that term is #3.

Why Rankings Matter

The vast majority of app store users never scroll past the first page of search results. Apps ranking in the top 5 for a keyword capture the bulk of traffic from that search term. Dropping from position 3 to position 15 can mean losing 80%+ of the traffic that keyword generates.

Factors That Influence Rankings

Rankings are determined by the app store search algorithm and are influenced by text relevance (keyword placement in metadata), download velocity, engagement metrics, ratings, and other signals. See the App Store Search Algorithm glossary entry for details.

Tracking Rankings

Use ASO tools like ASODOG to track your rankings for target keywords daily. Manual checking is unreliable because search results can be personalized based on the user’s location, download history, and device.

Key tracking patterns to watch for:

  • Steady climb - your optimization is working, continue current strategy
  • Plateau - you’ve hit a ceiling, consider stronger metadata changes or improving non-text signals
  • Sudden drop - possible algorithm update, new competitor, or metadata regression
  • Volatility - rankings fluctuating daily suggest the algorithm is uncertain about your relevance

Rankings and Downloads

The relationship between ranking position and downloads is not linear. Position #1 gets dramatically more traffic than position #5, which gets dramatically more than position #10. Focus your efforts on moving keywords from page 2 to page 1 and from mid-page-1 to the top 3.
