Keyword Ranking
The position at which an app appears in search results for a specific keyword in the App Store or Google Play.
Keyword ranking is the position your app holds when a user searches for a specific term. If your app appears third for “meditation timer,” your ranking for that phrase is #3.
Why Rankings Matter
The vast majority of app store users never scroll past the first page of search results. Apps in the top 5 for a keyword capture the bulk of traffic from that search term. Dropping from position 3 to position 15 can mean losing 80%+ of search-driven downloads.
Factors That Influence Rankings
The app store search algorithm determines rankings based on text relevance (keyword placement in metadata), download velocity, engagement metrics, ratings, and other signals. See the App Store Search Algorithm glossary entry for details.
Tracking Rankings
Use App Store Optimization (ASO) tools like ASODOG to track your rankings for target keywords daily. Manual checking is unreliable because search results shift based on the user’s location, download history, and device.
Key tracking patterns to watch for:
- Steady climb - your optimization is working, continue current strategy
- Plateau - you’ve hit a ceiling, consider stronger metadata changes or improving non-text signals
- Sudden drop - possible algorithm update, new competitor, or metadata regression
- Volatility - rankings fluctuating daily suggest the algorithm is uncertain about your relevance
Rankings and Downloads
The relationship between position and downloads is not linear. Position #1 captures far more traffic than #5, which in turn outperforms #10 by a wide margin. Focus your efforts on moving keywords from page 2 to page 1 and from mid-page to the top 3.
