Modifier Patterns
Common words and phrases appended to seed keywords to create long-tail keyword variations, such as audience, feature, use case, and attribute modifiers.
Modifier patterns are templates for transforming broad seed keywords into specific long-tail phrases. By systematically applying modifiers, you can generate hundreds of keyword candidates from a small set of seeds.
Common Modifier Categories
| Type | Examples | Applied to “workout” |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | for beginners, for women, for seniors | workout for beginners |
| Use case | for weight loss, for muscle, at home | workout at home |
| Feature | with timer, with music, no equipment | workout with timer |
| Attribute | free, simple, best, daily, quick | free workout app |
| Duration | 5 minute, 30 minute, short | 5 minute workout |
| Time | morning, evening, lunch break | morning workout app |
| Platform | for iPhone, widget, Apple Watch | workout Apple Watch |
Systematic Application
Apply every relevant modifier category to every seed keyword. Not every combination will be useful, but the process ensures you don’t miss valuable long-tail opportunities.
A single seed keyword combined with 7 modifier categories and 3-5 modifiers per category generates 20-35 candidates. Multiply this by 20 seeds and you have 400-700 raw candidates to evaluate.
Filtering Modifiers
After generation, filter out combinations that are nonsensical, irrelevant to your app, or have zero search volume. The remaining candidates are your long-tail keyword pool for KGR analysis and metadata placement.
