App Review Process
Apple's human review of every app and update submission for policy compliance, functionality, and user safety before distribution.
The App Review Process is Apple’s quality gate that every app and app update must pass before becoming available on the App Store. A team of human reviewers examines each submission against the App Store Review Guidelines to verify compliance, functionality, and user safety.
How It Works
Developers submit their app binary and metadata through App Store Connect. Apple’s review team then tests the app on actual devices, checking that it works as described, follows all guidelines, and does not contain harmful or misleading content. The typical review time is 24 to 48 hours, though it can vary depending on complexity and submission volume. Developers can check their app’s status in App Store Connect throughout the process.
Common Review Outcomes
- Approved - the app meets all guidelines and is cleared for release
- Rejected - the app violates one or more guidelines and the developer receives a detailed explanation
- In Review - the app is currently being evaluated by the review team
Tips for a Smooth Review
Provide complete demo credentials if your app requires login. Include clear descriptions of any non-obvious features. Respond promptly and thoroughly to any reviewer questions through the Resolution Center. Testing your app against the guidelines before submission significantly reduces the chance of delays or rejection.
